Barbara Elaine Smith

October 28, 1958 — March 4, 2006

Chicago

Barbara Elaine Smith was born on October 28, 1958, to the union of the late Dollie Mae and Lavell Evans. She was one of seven children and, from an early age, was determined to do things her own way.

Affectionately known as "Toot," Barbara truly marched to the beat of her own drum. Her spirited personality, strong opinions, and famous phrase "Mine, Mine, Mine!" — were all expressions of a heart that loved deeply. Those who knew her understood that even her stubbornness came from a place of devotion and care for the people she held dear.

Barbara devoted her life to Christ at a young age and carried a steadfast faith throughout her life. As her husband fondly shared, "She loved her some God — she called on Him all day long." Her faith was a constant source of strength, guidance, and comfort.

Barbara had a natural gift with numbers and spent many years working as a Medical Biller and Coder at Loyola Hospital. She took pride in her work and in the skills she developed over the years.

She often joked that her only regret was not investing in cellular phones when she once had the opportunity.

THOUGH SHE MAY NOT HAVE CONSIDERED HERSELF A FIGHTER, BARBARA FOUGHT THE GOOD FIGHT OF FAITH AND LIFE WITH ADMIRABLE RESILIENCE AND DETERMINATION.

On Tuesday, March 4, 2026, Barbara answered the call to be reunited with loved ones who preceded her in death: her parents, Lavell Evans and Dollie Mae Pegues Houston; her beloved grandmother, I.D. Mallory lovingly known as "Momma Dee Dee": her brother, Melvin Evans; and her sisters, Evelyn Evans, Annie Thomas, and Carliss Evans. She leaves to cherish her memory her brothers, Marvin Evans (Regina) and Hardy Evans (Diane); her special sister, Freddie Street; and her

"love-made-us-family" siblings, Eric, Greg, and Valencia "Netta" Patterson. Barbara also leaves behind her devoted husband of 30 years, Arthur "Lightfoot" Smith; her daughter, Shiquita Evans; and her son, Barrius Malone (Kelli). She also shared a special bond with her daughter-in-love, Amy Cumpata, and her girls, Alyssa and Audryanna.

Barbara's greatest joy was her family She leaves a lifetime of cherished memories with her beloved grandchildren: Jakala (Tre), Joshua, Evelyn, Lakayla, Barrius Jr. ("Man-Man"), Kellci, and Kelise; and her treasured great-grandchildren: Amira, Treasure, Trinity, and Heaven.

She is also survived by her uncles, Sylvester and Harper, along with a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and lifelong friends who will continue to honor her life, legacy, and love.

Barbara Elaine Smith's life was marked by faith, strength, and a deep love for family. She will be remembered for her bold spirit, her unwavering devotion to God, and the lasting impact she made on the hearts of those who knew and loved her
