Linda Rice

December 7, 1952 — February 13, 2026

Evanston

Linda Kate Rice was born on December 7, 1952, in Winston, Mississippi, to the late L.C. Carter and

Nettie Jane Carter. In her early years, her family relocated to Evanston, Illinois, where she was

raised and later attended Evanston Township High School. At the age of fifteen, she was baptized,

beginning a lifelong foundation of faith that carried her through every season of her life.

On February 14, 1989, Linda married Edward Rice. Their marriage was far from perfect, but it was

grounded in deep love and loyalty. Linda didn’t play about Edward, and anyone who knew them

could say the same about him. They stood by each other through life’s ups and downs, remaining

committed and united. Though they had no children together, Edward brought four children into

their extended family circle. She loved as her own.

Linda was a devoted mother to her two sons, Maurice “Shorty” Carter, who preceded her in

death, and Robert Carter.

Linda was known for her vibrant personality and her love for family gatherings. She was truly the

life of the party. She loved playing cards, dancing, and trying her luck with the lottery. If music was

playing, Linda was moving. If cards were on the table, she was ready to play. She also enjoyed

fishing and treasured every opportunity to create lasting memories with her family. She may not

have been known for cooking, but she was absolutely known for bringing joy, laughter, and

unforgettable energy wherever she went.

Her grandchildren meant the world to her, and she didn’t play about them. They will miss her

dearly: Briana Carter-Davenport (husband, Devonte Davenport), Karica Carter, Linda Carter,

Destiny Carter, Maurice Carter, and Jouana Carter. She also leaves behind eight cherished great-

grandchildren. In addition, her bonus grandchildren will miss her dearly as well, as she loved and

embraced them as her own.

Linda is survived by her loving sister, Nancy Freeman (husband, Lewis Freeman), and was

preceded in death by her sister, Joy Lynn Buford. She leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews,

extended family members, and friends who will forever hold her memory close to their hearts.

Linda Kate Rice will be remembered for her strength, her loyalty, her lively spirit, and the deep

love she had for her family. Her laughter, her dancing, her card games, and the beautiful

memories she created will live on through generations.

She will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
