Mary Alice Green

Jan 24, 1935 — Jun 9, 2026

Chicago

Mary Alice Green was born in New Market, Alabama, on January 24, 1935, to the late George and Emma Petty. She was the seventh of ten children.

At an early age, she accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior. In December 1949, her family moved to Chicago, Illinois, where she became a member of Union Missionary Baptist Church.

In 1963, she was united in Holy Matrimony to Tiszar Sylvester Green. To this union, one son, Tiszar Jr., was born.

Mary was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, entrepreneur, and property owner. Alongside her beloved husband, she owned and operated several successful businesses, including laundromats, grocery stores, an ice cream parlor, and hardware stores. Through faith, determination, and hard work, they built a legacy that benefited both their family and community.

In 1982, Mary relocated to Alabama, where she became a member of Hopewell Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Leroy Cole. She later moved to Kentucky and enjoyed farm life, gardening, and spending time outdoors. When her husband became ill, they returned to Chicago to be closer to family.

Upon returning to Chicago, Mary reunited with Union Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Marvin E. Alexander, Jr. She faithfully served on the Mothers Board, Nurses Board, Trustee Board, Missionary Society, Beautifying Committee, and as a Sunday School Teacher. Her life reflected her deep love for God and her commitment to serving others.

Mary was a devoted prayer warrior whose greatest desire was for everyone she encountered—especially youth and young adults—to know Christ. She faithfully prayed for her family, friends, and church family, and her faith remained steadfast throughout her life. Even during her final days, her testimony was not one of fear, but of worship, confidence, and complete trust in the Savior she loved as she continued to pray and sing praises unto God – “I got a race to run, don’t try to block me, move out of my way” and “Lord I’m running, trying to make 100, 99 ½ won’t do.”

Mary deeply loved her family and treasured every opportunity to gather with them. She especially enjoyed planning family reunions and traveling each year to spend time with loved ones.

On June 9, 2026, Mary peacefully entered eternal rest and went home to be with the Lord, with her beloved sister, Delores, by her side. Though she has departed this earthly life, her legacy of faith, love, service, and devotion will continue to live through her family and all who were blessed to know her.

She was preceded in death by: her husband, Tiszar Sylvester Green; her son, Tiszar Green Jr.; her sisters, Pinkie, Fannie, and Vanita; and her brothers, George, Sammie, and Joseph.

She leaves to cherish her precious memories: her grandchildren, Tiszar (Katriana) Green III, Christian Green, Tiszara Green, Chrishara Green, Tyler Green, Matthew Green and Jeremiah Welch; great- grandchildren, Jaylan Shorty, Jayce Shorty, Blair Baker, Christian Green Jr., Terrion Strickland, Kristen Green, Trinity Strickland, Skylar Green, Summer Green, Syair Green, Sariyah Green and Tristian Strickland; sisters, Delores (Warner) Mitchell and Louise Chester; special nephew, Kenny Love; devoted hospice nurses, Michelle and Julie; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, great-great nieces and nephews, cousins, other relatives, church family and friends.

I have a fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith: 2 Timothy 4:7
