Sammie Baker, a beloved matriarch, mentor, and source of strength to her family, was born on December 15, 1930, to the late Reverend Sam Freelon and Mary Freelon in Grenada, Mississippi.
Sammie accepted Christ as her Savior at an early age.
Sammie married Gene Baker, and to this union, children were born. Sammie then moved to Chicago, IL.
Sammie lived a long and meaningful life marked by wisdom, resilience, and unwavering love.
Sammie was known for her sharp mind, strong spirit, and the lessons she passed down—often reminding those she loved to give her flowers while she lived. Her words carried weight, her presence brought comfort, and her pride in her family was evident in everything she did.
Sammie, also known as Mother/Mama, was an entrepreneur. Sammie owned multiple businesses, including a game room and 2 thrift stores. She took pride in helping the community that she lived in. Sammie also took great pride in seeing her loved ones grow, celebrating their successes while always encouraging them to reach higher. She had a way of making everyone feel seen, heard, and supported.
Sammie peacefully entered eternal rest on January 17, 2026, at the age of 95. Sammie was preceded in death by her loved ones. She now rejoins in heaven. Her husband Gene Baker, her father Reverend Sam Freelon, her mother Mrs Mary Freelon, 4 children, Sam Baker, Patricia Baker, Neicey Baker, and baby boy. Along with her 3 sisters, Marie Harris, Mary Carradine, and Annie Pearl Beck, 8 brothers, James, Roland Miller, Joe, Leroy, Johnnie, Felix, Albert, and Charles Freelon
She leaves behind a legacy of love that lives on through her children, Larry Baker (Sarah), Mary Ann Baker/ Roach, Ricky Baker, Gwendolyn Baker, Wendie Baker, 1 sister in law Gladys Freelon, her grandchildren, great-grandchildren , great-great grandchildren, extended family, and all who were blessed to know her.
